Library Cards

Patrons may apply for a Library card at the Circulation Desk. Identification with the applicant's address (e.g. a driver's license) is required in order to receive a card. All residents of Duxbury are eligible as are residents of non-Old Colony Library Network (OCLN) communities who do not already have an OCLN Library card. A $5.00 fee will be charged to replace a lost library card.

Sign up for an eCard online.Once you have your eCard number, please be sure to visit and have your eCard upgraded to a permanent library card.

If you already have a library card, please DO NOT sign up for an eCard. Children and students through grade 8 are encouraged to apply for a library card in the Children's Department.

Through grade 8, applicants must have a parent's signature and proof of residency in order to obtain a card.

Patrons should notify circulation staff anytime there is a change in address, telephone number, or email.

Placing a Hold

Items held by members of the Old Colony Library Network:

You can place a hold on most items that you find in the online catalog. You can do this from home, at one of the online catalogs in the library, or with the assistance of a librarian. To do this yourself, you will need your library card number, also referred to as the user id and a PIN number. The default PIN is OCLN. After your initial login you will be asked to change your PIN. Once you have placed a hold on an item, the first available copy in the network will be sent to the library that you have selected in the holds process as your pickup library. When the library receives the item, you will be notified by either phone, email, or text message.

Items not held by members the Old Colony Library Network:

If the item you want is not in our network, you can still request it through our Inter-library loan (ILL) service . Go to the Reference Desk on the upper level or call 934-2721, ext. 131 or email us to request a title via ILL.

Checking Material Out

All library materials are checked out at the Circulation Desk on the Main Level. A patron must have a valid library card with them to borrow materials. It is the responsibility of the patron to return all materials on time, pay all overdue charges and to pay replacement costs for lost or damaged items that have been checked out on their cards.

Lost/Damaged Material

Patrons are responsible for all library materials that they check out. If a patron loses a piece of a library item, such as a disc, they will be required to pay a replacement cost. In the unfortunate event that a patron loses an entire library item, such as a book, they will be charged the replacement cost for that item. If library staff determines that an item has been damaged beyond repair and will not circulate, the patron will be charged the replacement cost of that item. If the item belongs to another library, that library will assess replacement costs.

Renewing Material

Renewals can be accomplished in person, or by telephone, with the assistance of the circulation staff. Items may also be renewed from home online, by accessing your account, or in the library at the on-line public access computer terminals. High demand items and best-selling novels are often unavailable for renewal. Each library sets the parameters for the number of times in which an item can be renewed.

To renew an item, go to the Library Catalog, and click on Manage My Account. You will need to type your user ID (the barcode number on your library card) and PIN.
