Interlibrary Loans

We can get material for you that is not available at the Duxbury Free Library or member Libraries of the Old Colony Library Network (OCLN).

Let us help you give us a good citation and we can probably get you what you seek: out of print books, journal articles, movies, genealogical information and more. While there are limits to what we can request, such as reference works or best sellers, we have been very successful in getting even obscure material sent to the Duxbury Free Library.

What can be borrowed via InterLibrary Loan:

  • foreign language books
  • large print books
  • out-of-print fiction
  • out-of-print fiction non-fiction
  • government documents from other libraries
  • photocopies of periodical articles in accordance with the copyright laws.
  • sound recordings, audiobooks, videos and DVDs - more difficult to obtain but can sometimes be borrowed

What cannot be borrowed via InterLibrary Loan:

  • material owned by Duxbury Free Library or OCLN that is temporarily in use
  • entire issues of periodicals
  • titles not yet published
  • inexpensive readily available paperbacks
  • bestsellers
  • reference material, textbooks, multi-volume sets and old, rare or valuable materials - usually not available

Who can use InterLibrary Loan:

  • The borrower must be a registered OCLN patron in good standing.

How to use InterLibrary Loan:

  • An Interlibrary loan request must be completed on appropriate forms with complete bibliographic information.
  • The source of the information must be included.
  • A “need by” date should be indicated, if applicable, and whether a non-circulating copy of the requested material is acceptable if no circulating copy can be borrowed.

Costs to Patrons:

While patrons are not usually assessed charges for interlibrary loan material, if significant charges are involved with the acquisition of material those charges will be passed on to the borrower. No charge will be levied without prior authorization from the borrower.

Patron responsibilities:

Patrons should provide a complete citation for the desired item. Materials must be returned by the due date; renewals may be requested before the due date. Patrons are liable for all fines accrued.

Limits to InterLibrary Loan:

The Duxbury Free Library reserves the right to limit the number of materials requested for one patron at any one time. Some items may be used only at the Reference Desk. Interlibrary Loan service will be limited or suspended for patrons who repeatedly fail to pick up requested interlibrary loan materials or return materials by the due date or who damage or deface interlibrary loan materials.

Getting Started:

Come to the Reference Desk on the upper level or call 781-934-2721, ext. 131 or email us to request InterLibrary Loan material.
