Program Title: South Shore Libraries Young Adult Video Contest

Objective of Video Contest:
Ø to provide an imaginative venue for teens to: express themselves using library and community resources; learn new technologies; and, develop a connection to their local community as well as their regional library community.
Ø To provide youth services librarians with the opportunity to work in collaboration with their local cable stations, school media club moderators, teachers, and librarians across the region for the purpose of promoting the use of a variety of library resources, services and facilities.

Description of the Program:

The program involves three components, each demanding its own set of logistics and sponsorship. It is recommended that each participating library write its own set of program plans for each component.

First, interested librarians and/or teachers will attend a planning workshop offered by the Southeastern Massachusetts Library System to develop: a common set of guidelines for the contest; parameters for the participating teens; a timeline of activities to be handled by each participating library; and, publicity materials.

Second, each participating library will organize and hold its own YA video contest within the designated timeframe according to the parameters set at the planning workshop. Each participating library is encouraged to offer production workshops prior to the contest to help young adults learn about copyright issues, intellectual freedom, videography techniques, editing, etc. Each participating library will announce a grand-prize winning video.

Third, each participating library or school will invite production teams of its grand-prize winner to the “Felix Awards Night ” to be hosted at the Duxbury Free Library. Guidelines for the invitations will be determined at the planning workshop. During the “Felix Awards Night ” clips from the grand-prize videos will be viewed, Felix statues will be awarded for each grand-prize video, and, refreshments will be served.

Please Note:
The Southeastern Massachusetts Library System (SEMLS) Regional Office will provide a forum for the planning workshop for libraries interested in participating in the South Shore Young Adult Video Contest. The contest is not a project of SEMLS, nor is SEMLS a sponsor of the project. The Assistant Administrator for Youth Service at SEMLS is available for consulting services in all areas of this project.

The contact person for libraries participating in the South Shore Video Contest is Ellen Snoeyenbos, Young Adult Services Librarian, Duxbury Free Library. Please contact Ellen at 781-934-2721, etx. 106, or at ellens@ocln.org .
